Assignment 1: Information Brief Assignment task Assignment: Guidelines: 3,000 word Proposal for a Group Exhibition (in an artist-run space/ gallery or Museum) or Essay on Curating or negotiated equivalent All work presented for assessment should be supported by a written Critical Evaluation that reflects upon and evaluates your work. Jim Lambie Exhibition Proposal – What does the assignment involve? The assignment involved the production of a proposal document for a ‘Group Exhibition’. You will propose an exhibition that will take place either within a small independent art space, a public gallery, or a museum. Your choice of site or venue should be an appropriate one for the scale, scope and concept of your exhibition or project. The proposal should reflect a real-art-world possibility, which could essentially take place in the next 3 years. The proposal therefore must be realistic in terms of your own ambition, professional development and position within an art-world within this time-scale. Your proposal should be a coherently presented report containing the following elements: A written Exhibition outline: which includes the following content. The core content of this paper needs to reflect a well researched and contextualised, ‘curator concept and rationale’ for an exhibition. – support your arguments/ thoughts with evidence such as quotation, examples of other practitioners, images, etc. Concept for the exhibition – What is the concept for the exhibition? What is the inspiration for this exhibition? What is your approach to curating? How does this connect with historical and contemporary curatorial thinking? Artist’s/ producers/ works – What artists/ producers/ works, have you selected/ commissioned? How will their work function in the context of the exhibition framework. How will their work benefit from being exhibited in this way? Presentation/ display – Discuss the approach to the presentation/ display of the works/ objects, etc. Use accompanying examples of other exhibitions to make your argument. (images/ references etc!) Venue – What venue have you chosen and why this site (small independent art space, a public gallery, or a museum.) What is its significance in relation to your approach to curating? Look at previous programming at this space and see if this is a venue that might be interested in your exhibition proposal. Contextualisation – Discuss examples of (professional) historical and contemporary exhibitions and curators and texts; which influence your thinking. (images/ references, quotes etc !) The contextualisation needs to underpin the ideas in the sections above, to solidify your arguments. Appendices: (This section is not included in the word-count) Visual reference material Your proposal should contain at least 6 images, of previous work by the selected artists. Examples/ Images of display and presentation types that have influenced your own thinking on the structure of the exhibition Where you plan to exhibit existing works, you will need images of that work in-situ; and if you plan to exhibit the work in a different context a rough mock-up of the work in its new position will be required. You will also need to submit a gallery plan with all the work in position. A line drawn plan, CAD diagramme or other digital format, will be fine as long as it clearly illustrates the layout of the exhibition. Curriculum Vitae Where possible you should provide CVs or brief biographies of all the contributing artists/ producers. CVs need be no longer than one page, and Artist/ Design/ Maker statements Bibliography: A list of books, publications, websites, etc. that you have referenced to generate this proposal document Please give the number of words at the end of the document For students taking this as an option module the report should be 3,000 words. (These totals do not include the content of the appendices as listed above). Academic Text – What does the assignment involve? Identification of an aspect of curating/ curatorial practice which you will explore and contextualise through the reading lists, and other research materials. Submission details Deadline: 012/01/2021 – 12 noon – submission via digital upload onto moodle as a word document or PDF. About Cheating and Plagiarism You are reminded of the University’s Disciplinary Procedures that refer to plagiarism. A copy of the Disciplinary Procedure is available from iCity. Except where the assessment of an assignment is group based, the final piece of work that is submitted must be your own work. Close similarity between assignments is likely to lead to an investigation for cheating. You must also ensure that you acknowledge all sources you have used. Submissions that are considered to be the result of collusion or plagiarism will be dealt with under the University’s Disciplinary Procedures, and the penalty may involve the loss of academic credits. If you have any doubts about the extent to which you are allowed to collaborate with your colleagues, or the conventions for acknowledging the sources you have used, you should first of all consult module documentation and, if still unclear, your tutor.
