Assignment Overview
One of the characteristics that leaders are expected to possess is the ability to do three things: 1) Recognize the warning signs of potential conflicts. 2) Identify the source or sources of the conflict. 3) Resolve the conflict fairly, equitably, and quickly.
In order to successfully accomplish these challenges, a leader must be well versed in knowing which management style to use when resolving conflict. In this assignment, you will discuss which styles would work or not work in resolving a particular conflict.
Here’s the scenario:
The issues in the software development area of Informational Systems have grown into a genuine workplace conflict. One of the issues is interdependence—the Millennials want to schedule their work on their timetable and not rely on the work schedule of the older Baby Boomers. Also, the Baby Boomers are pushing for changes in the rewards system—they believe that bonuses should be commensurate with performance while the Millennials think that everyone should be rewarded equally for participation in projects.
Case Assignment
NOTE: There are no right or wrong answers for this assignment. What’s important is how thoroughly you support your decisions.
After reviewing the scenario and the readings, especially the sections on Conflict Management Styles and Which Conflict Management Style is the Best?, prepare a 2- to 3-page paper on the following:
Using the criteria that fall under “Use” or “Do Not Use” in the Which Conflict Management Style is the Best? section, describe why you think each particular style would either work or not work.
Fully incorporate the scenario, the readings, and at least one outside source to help support your paper.
Make sure that all of the sources you use are fully cited in the body of the paper.
To help keep your thoughts organized, structure your paper so that each style is its own section.
For example, following the slides in the Which Conflict Management Style is the Best? section, begin with the Competing Style.
In your narrative, first present why you think it would or would not work. Then support your decision using the “Use” or “Do Not Use” criteria and the information provided in the scenario.
Then do the same for each of the remaining styles: Accommodating, Avoiding, Compromising, Collaborating.
Here’s’ another example;
Competing Style
I think this style would work for this situation.
It would work because as noted in the ‘Use’ criteria, “An emergency is looming and there’s no room for debate” (Lumen Learning, Conflict Management, Which Conflict Management Style is the Best?). The reading also tells us that the competing style is used when “…one party pushing ahead with his or her own mission and goals with no concern for the other party in the conflict.” (Lumen Learning, Conflict Management, Conflict Management Styles). We can see this happening in the scenario. The Baby Boomers are, “…pushing for changes in the rewards system…” and the Millennials, “…want to schedule their work on their timetable and not rely on the work schedule of the older Baby Boomers.” (LED 201 Case 3 Assignment Scenario). Since each group has essentially its own agenda, this scenario is clearly an example of one party seeking to satisfy its own interests regardless of the impact this will have on the other group (Lumen Learning, Conflict management, Conflict Management Styles).
2. Accommodating Style
Follow the same process as for #1.
