You may examine one style of (African American influenced) music exclusively (blues, gospel, jazz, hip hop, etc.). If you choose this option address the historical roots of the selected musical genre, identify some of its key innovators, and discuss its impact on American music. You also should identify at least two or three compositions or recordings that in your opinion help to define and represent the genre, and identify two or more musicians who you feel exemplify the style.

You may select a specific African American musician/composer from any era of African American music history and write an essay about her or his career, musical training, musical innovation, creativity, place in history, and impact on American music. You may not select Blind Tom, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bessie Smith, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles or Tupac.
