SST102: Human Factors and Systems Design |
ASSIGNMENT QUESTION
Hand-held remote controls are commonplace in all homes and workplaces for use with projection systems, televisions, home-theatre systems, Cable-TV set-top boxes, CD and DVD players, etc. These remote controls are also able to control information appearing on a display (e.g. projection screen, television, etc.).
Within your GBA group, select one such hand-held remote control to assess in terms of physical ergonomics, cognitive ergonomics and human-computer interaction perspective. In your assessment, you should use the remote control to carry out a task on the display/screen (minimum one task comprising at least three sub-tasks). Discuss how human factors have shaped the design of your hand-held remote control and identify its good design features and shortcomings.
Propose design enhancements/changes for each area covered. In your proposal, you are to clearly explain the basis of your recommendations. Show how you have applied the relevant human factors methodology and principles to make your recommendations. Include photographs and drawings to illustrate your points.
