the basics of not only literary analysis, but also quotation technique and MLA style and documentation.

Due Monday, June 20th, no later than 11:59 p.m.
Your task for this “test” is to write ONE paragraph, approximately 200-300 words long. Think of this as a “glorified” version of one of the discussion posts we have been practicing all semester–similar to a discussion post, but one that you edit and polish more carefully in order to show that you know the basics of not only literary analysis, but also quotation technique and MLA style and documentation. (Note–you are NOT required to provide a discussion question in this paragraph). Using the SEE-I paragraph structure (see the guidelines for discussion posts for a refresher on this) your paragraph should answer the following question:

Of the literary works we have read so far in this class, which one have you found the most interesting OR intriguing OR frustrating OR otherwise thought-provoking? Why?
The Norton Anthology American Literature 9th Edition
1914-1945
( The Passing of Grandison) (740-760)
Even if you did not find any of the readings riveting, chances are, there are a couple that stood out to you—pick one of those. Your answer will require a bit of reflection on your part—you might want to start by asking yourself the following: which of the stories, poems, or essays we have read caught your attention more than others? Was it because you could relate to it in some way? Did it remind you of something else you may have read or viewed? Did it present you with a new perspective? Was the writing style intriguing? Does the literary work seem relevant in some way to a current issue or contemporary problem? You are free to discuss any of these aspects (and more that might not be on this list) in your paragraph. You will also need to include and appropriately integrate a quote from the work of literature you choose. Make sure the quoted portion fits and adds to the paragraphs content; make sure that you set up the quotation with a lead-in phrase and comment on or explain it afterward.
Your paragraph will be graded according to the following criteria:
CLARITY: Could you elaborate further on that point? Could you express that point in another way? Could you give me an illustration? Could you give me an example? Clarity is the gateway standard. If a statement is unclear, we cannot determine whether it is accurate or relevant. In fact, we cannot tell anything about it because we don’t yet know what it is saying. Clear responses will articulate a STATEMENT about a particular aspect of the text and take a position/express a perspective on that aspect using ELABORATION and EXEMPLIFICATION to explain and expand on the statement. The statement will NOT merely summarize the plot or main point, but describe what the text or its author is DOING with the text. Additionally, to remain clear, paragraphs should not have any major grammatical errors or mechanical problems that interfere with meaning.
20 points maximum
ACCURACY: Is that really true? How could we check that? How could we find out if that is true? A statement can be clear but not accurate if it misinterprets or oversimplifies a text. Furthermore, good literary responses provide evidence and EXAMPLES in the form of details or quoted material from the text that back up your STATEMENTS. Any paraphrased or quoted material must be cited in the text (using MLA in-text citations) to prove the accuracy of your evidence. Additionally, any quoted material MUST BE FRAMED/BLENDED/SMOOTHLY INTEGRATED into the text of your paragraph–no “dropped” quotations should stand alone as their own sentences without at least an introductory phrase.
20 points maximum
DEPTH: How does your answer address the complexities in the question? How are you taking into account the problems in the question? Is that dealing with the most significant factors? A statement can be clear and accurate, but superficial (that is, lack depth). For example, responses to literature that merely summarize the text or focus on an obvious aspect of it are not really responses. When you approach a literary work, try to consider the problems, contradictions, or complications in a text—the less obvious details that cause readers to ponder and investigate important questions.
20 points maximum
BREADTH: Do we need to consider another point of view? Is there another way to look at this question? What would this look like from the point of view of . . .? A line of reasoning may be clear accurate, and deep, but lack breadth if it recognizes only the insights of one side of the question. The breadth of your response is going to be demonstrated in your ILLUSTRATION—where you connect or relate the text to another text, a historical/social circumstance, or your own life in order to approach it from a broader point of view.
20 points maximum
MLA citations (20 points): At the end of your paragraph, provide correct MLA works cited information for the specific work in the textbook (see https://irsc.libguides.com/c.php?g=483085&p=3303413 https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/06/ and scroll down to “anthology with editors.” Cite an online copy properly if you are not using the textbook–see top example on this page https://irsc.libguides.com/c.php?g=483085&p=3303422

Also remember to cite the quoted portion also in the text using a parenthetical citation (see https://irsc.libguides.com/mla/intextcitations
Your paragraph (unlike a discussion post but like an essay) should also follow proper MLA format–including double-spacing, MLA header in upper left corner, and hanging indent of the works cited entry. DO NOT SKIP THIS PART.
ABSOLUTELY NO PLAGIARISM. This should be obvious, but the paragraph should be your own thoughts and words, and any ideas or wording gleaned from other sources MUST be cited BOTH in the text of the paragraph and on the work cited page. Any wording copied from the literary work OR any secondary research must be quoted appropriately. Like your essays, these paragraphs will be run through Turnitin.com.
