Teacher Interview Questions: Mr. Suarez
Curriculum/Subject Knowledge
- What does individualized teaching mean to you?
“I believe it means that I have to analyze the data I have obtained from teacher-made or standardized testing and targeting instruction around this information.”
- How do you individualize the learning process in your classroom?
“It is individualized by means of differentiated instruction practices. Students are grouped based on criteria such as areas of deficiency and I, as a teacher, target instruction on these areas for each particular group.”
- How do you integrate technology into your teaching and into students’ learning?
“I integrate it by using District-approved software and online tools that enhance learning of reading comprehension and writing skills, such as I-Ready and Reading Plus.”
Instructional Techniques
- Give an example of how you have used cooperative learning in your classroom.
“One of the ways I use cooperative learning is by sitting the students in groups to promote teamwork on certain assignments. I also use peer revision in writing. I have students revise each other’s writing compositions in the areas of FOCS (Focus, Organization, Conventions, Support) using teacher-generated rubrics.”
- What two core teaching strategies do you use to achieve your desired results?
“I use differentiated instruction to help my students reach their highest possible achievements and I use data disaggregation as well.”
Classroom Management
- How do you set standards for acceptable performance in your class at the beginning of the year?
“I set standards by providing direct instruction of the school’s discipline plan and clearly communication the rules and procedures that govern classroom interactions.”
- In your opinion, who should be responsible for the discipline in the school?
“I think the entire staff – the teachers, counselors, administrators, and support personnel – is responsible for implementing the school’s discipline plan. Also, parents should teach their students to be ethical and responsible in school.”
Parent Relations/Communications
- Describe some ways you inform parents of what is going on in your classroom.
“I send them school-generated progress reports, and I may have telephone conferences or weekly-scheduled parent conferences to discuss their children’s’ performances in class.”
- How do you update parents about the progress of their child?
“I use things such as the Gradebook, Parent Portal, parent conferences, progress reports, report cards, and telephone conferences.”
- Describe how you become acquainted with parents and students.
“I regularly meet most parents, if not all, at the beginning of the school year when Open House invites every child’s parent to come meet their new teachers and view the classroom environment.”
Personality, Personal Attitudes/Professionalism
- Why did you want to teach?
“It gave me the opportunity to help my community by focusing on keeping kids off the streets and engaged in educational tasks, so that they can become successful, law-abiding, functional members of society.”
- Why do you want to teach in our School District?
“This area is a multicultural and diverse environment with ample opportunities of self-growth and professional development.”
Teacher Relationships With Students
- What kind of students do you like to work with? What type of students could you teach most effectively?
“I like to work with low level/struggling students. They have the largest room for academic improvement and are the most benefited by my structured pattern of instruction and classroom management.”
- What procedures do you use to evaluate student progress besides using texts?
“I create research projects for my students as well as carry out performance evaluations, such as writing portfolios.”
