Assignment You will write a formal argumentative essay following the Rogerian model, incorporating research from a variety of assigned sources to present a proposal/compromise on the topic of the influence of technology. You are required to use four sources for your research, two of which must be selected from your assigned readings (They Say/I Say, Ch. 20 Are We in a Race Against the Machine?). Your essay (as a Rogerian Model Argument) must contain balanced research of “both sides” of the issue; therefore, make sure your four sources allow for a balanced number of citations throughout your essay. Your essay will demonstrate a solid understanding of the critical thinking skills and strategies of the Rogerian model. Format and Requirements -MLA format (in-text citations and Works Cited List) -A minimum of 5 pages (No title page) -Typed in Times New Roman or Arial, 12pt font, double spaced, 1” margins -Top left corner: your full name, date, course and section number. -At center: your essay’s title (an original title, not just the topic of your essay) -No block quotes or quotes longer than 1-2 lines of text. Introductory Paragraph States the problem, without bias or revealing your position, engaging the reader (regardless of his or her position on the topic) in the importance of the issue, without “alienating” either side. II. First Body Paragraph: Reflects critical thinking by identifying three areas of “common ground” and/or goals of both sides of the issue. (Use at least 2 in-text citations to demonstrate these areas of common ground.) III. Third Body Paragraph(s) Recognize validity of the “first side’s” viewpoint, incorporating at least 2 in-text citations for support. IV. Third Body Paragraph(s) Recognize validity of the “second side’s” position, incorporating at least 2 in-text citations for support. V. Conclusion: Presents “thesis” or proposal, incorporating both sides of the issue with a possible compromise, solution, or “way to move forward” with the conflict successfully.
