The mechanical room

Auric Enterprises, Inc., is converting a five-story office building into an engineering office complex.A sketch of the building is given in Fig. P1-31. The company must add a new cooling system to the building. The chiller is to be placed in the mechanical room located on the first floor. Chilled fluid is to be pumped throughout the building to air-handling units (ARU) on the various floors. The head loss through the chiller is 22Q2, where Q is in cfs and the head loss is in ft-lbf/lbm. The cooling fluid leaves the chiller at 45°F and returns at 60°F.Because of a computer center, the cooling load for the fourth floor is different from the cooling loads of the remaining four floors. The cooling load on floors 1,2,3, and 5 is 350,000 Btu/hr. The cooling load for floor 4 is 700,000 Btu/hour. Tho (2) AHUs, operated in parallel, will be required on the fourth floor with a single AHU on each of the remaining floors. The AHUs are located near the center of each floor and have a head loss (hf D) of 155Q2, where Q is in cfs and the head loss is in ft-lbf/lbrn, The working fluid is Monsanto’s Therminol™. Fluid properties are:
