The paper should capture the individual’s most important contributions to Philadelphia and (if possible) America’s life and society, along with critical events that prepared, led up to, or otherwise qualified that individual by training, employment, or experience, for a place on the public stage. Be creative. Writing “profile pieces” is something of an art: It is similar to a biography in that it requires historical perspective and an eye for human character as well as an understanding of how private life can influence public behavior. Then, check out the names you have to choose from based on your areas of interest. If necessary, check out those you are interested in by searching Wikipedia for a good, brief biography of the individuals. I have checked out these Philadelphians, so there is definitely sufficient information available for papers on any one of them. Topic: Below your name on the Writing Schedule Sheet is the name and areas of importance of the person about whom you will write your Profile/Analysis Paper. That way you can do a bit of preliminary reading before we talk together about your ideas and approach to the the person. Assignment at a glance: You will submit a formal paper written in the form of a biographical profile that includes a critical analysis of the individual’s importance and reflecting themes, events, or individuals that we have studied this semester. Base your content on at least three academic/peer reviewed sources reference sources and any number of non-scholarly reference sources, about the Philadelphian of your choice. You will submit your paper electronically into Canvas and Vericite.  In addition to the paper itself, you will submit a Chronology Separately— including (1) a brief abstract of the key events of the individual’s life (sample abstract and chronology available in Canvas Files). This can be done in a well written paragraph capturing the key contribution(s) of your person, connections to one of our course themes, lasting impact on Philadelphia life, as well as (2) providing a chronological timeline, a bulleted list of the key events in your person’s life. Submit your paper and your abstract/chronology through Canvas and Vericite. Important Note: the purpose of this assignment is not to replicate an existing biography of your subject such as those on Wikipedia or other encyclopedic sources. What to include: The assignment consists of two related parts: the biographical analysis and a chronology of the person’s life. * Profile/Analysis: The paper should review the individual’s life, accomplishments, and contributions to the history of the city. The persons have been chosen and assigned with the central issues of our course in mind. Include information about personal and family life, but do not go into great detail unless there is a clear and significant relationship to the individual’s public life. * Abstract/Chronology: A one-paragraph identification (abstract) of the figure and his or her significance, followed by a short list or timeline of significant dates and events in the individual’s life. The chronology is intended to provide the key “public” information that you may not have touched on in your paper. Format: minimum 1000 words of text (4 to 5 pages), one and one-half-space, 12-point Times New Roman font. Include a title page (with a title, your name, instructor’s name, course name, and date submitted) and a Works Cited page prepared according to MLA format. Title page, illustrations, and reference page do not count toward the word limit. Additionally, Organization, style, spelling, grammar, sentence structure, clarity and concision are all evaluated as part of the overall grade for the assignment.
