The purpose of this assignment is to use your knowledge of sociological theory to understand your chosen topic. Choose an article from a newspaper, newsmagazine, or news website that discusses some aspect of the pandemic or uprisings that could be analyzed from one theoretical perspectives discussed in class.
You may choose from (only) the following perspectives:
Functionalism, Conflict, Symbolic Interactionism, Ethnomethodology, or Critical Theory
brief (1-2 paragraph) summary of the issue (be sure to include the title of the article you are referencing, the date of publication, and what source you found the article-ex. cnn.com, Time magazine…). You do not need to attach a copy of your article. You do not need a separate reference page for this assignment.
Be sure to clearly identify and explicate the basic tenets/concepts of your one chosen theories/theorists to the specific aspect of the pandemic or anti-racist uprisings your article focuses on (for example, you can consider the financial/economic impact, the social impact, the global impact, global inequalities, gender inequalities, racial inequalities, the psychological impact of social distancing, the various mental health implications, suicide, addiction, families living in tight quarters and complicated family dynamics, the college experience and what this means now and later, implications for higher ed as a result of this—more schools might assume more can be moved online. What does that mean to you as students?, racism amidst the virus—i.e. the treatment of Asians and Asian Americans, ageism and the treatment of the elderly, expecting a baby at this moment in history, relationships and intimacy now (people away from significant others, the toll on marriages, etc), unemployment, food insecurity and hunger, self-harm, the trappings of domestic violence and incest and assault amidst quarantine, health care, effects on friendships, technology, creativity that emerges during these rocky periods in history—art, music, literature, dance, film, poetry, etc…). Do not write about the state stay-at-home orders or debate about students going back to in-person school this fall. Your article is merely a jumping off point for this analysis.

conclusion regarding which of the two theories/perspectives/theorists you think allows a fuller explanation/understanding of your social phenomenon 

I anticipate 2 pages, double-spaced typed pages for this assignment. Essays should comply with standard formatting rules (1-inch margins, 12-pt font, double-spaced text).
