IT IS BASED ON SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES
For this assignment, students will use their knowledge of theory and apply it to the movie Crash (2004), which interweaves several connected stories about race, class, family and gender. This movie will be played in class, and students will have to tie in three theorists and how their concepts apply to characters’ lives in the movie. Papers need to be between 5-6 pages in length with 12-point font and double spaced (Times New Roman Font). This assignment will allow students to think critically about classical theory and apply it to everyday life (satisfies course objectives #1, #4, and #5). The points will be distributed as followed:
Introduction and Thesis: This section will include an introduction of the theories and concepts you decided to use in the paper. Please do not use this section to explain what the movie is about. I have seen the movie, and I can Google the plot online! This is meant to give the reader an idea of what is to come in the rest of the paper. (10 points)
Theories and Concepts: The body of the paper is where you describe the connection of theory to the movie. This is the fun part! However, I am also grading your ability to explain the theory accurately and effectively. In other words, does it make sense? Did you explain theory correctly? Please do the theorists justice! (20 points)
Conclusion: This section of the paper should be the closing remarks of your paper. This can be a tough section for some students, but I would recommend writing about how you came about finding concepts and theory in the movie. Were the concepts difficult to find? Can you explain (e.g. similar life experiences)? In what way did this paper help you with applying theory outside of the classroom? (10 points)
Grammar/Spelling: I am a freak about correct grammar and spelling. I am also looking for smooth transitions from one section to the next. Lastly, students need to cite in ASA format. If you want to receive the most points for this section, please have your paper reviewed by the writing center, or any resources the campus has that assist students in writing. (10 points)
