Based on your reading of the text, the article “10 Ways to be an Effective Advocate for your Child at School”, and your watching of the videos: “Becoming an Advocate for your Child with Disability” and “Parental Involvement: Connecting Parents to School,” give advice to a parent based on the following situation: “Abbey is starting her first year of kindergarten. She is excited to be going to school with her older sister, Hannah. On the first day of school Abbey is picked up in a separate “mini” bus. Abbey wants to ride the regular school bus with her sister, but due to her diagnosis of Downs Syndrome, it is the school policy that she ride the special education bus. Abbey is quite upset and wants to ride the “regular” bus with her sister and neighborhood friends; after all, they are going to the same school. Abbey is very verbal and is comfortable and developmentally able to ride the regular bus. As Abbey’s kindergarten teacher, her mother expresses her concerns to you. How can you support Abbey’s mother to be an advocate for her daughter her efforts to convince the administration to be flexible and allow Abbey to ride the regular bus to school.”
