Case Study: Teenage Pregnancy
Adolescence is a time when young people begin to develop greater autonomy and a
stronger sense of who they are. It is also period of risk-taking behaviours such
as alcohol and substance misuse, smoking, vaping and unprotected sexual activity.
Risky sexual behaviours contribute to increased rates of STIs, and unplanned
pregnancies. It is important for CHNs to address the prevention
of negative health outcomes as well as supporting those who have experienced them.
One high school in a community continues to see an ever-increasing rate of teen
pregnancy.
Research has cited that school-based sex education classes, including having free
condoms available in high school, are responsible for reducing the rates of teen
pregnancy. Although some parents support both these initiatives, they are many
who are unable to admit their children are sexually active and are against proceeding
with education and distribution of condoms.
The school community has invited the students, parents, school board, municipal and
provincial governments to assist in the development of a school based sexual health
curriculum course.
While working with the community to develop this program, a great deal of information
was collected related to trends in teenage pregnancy rates, the use of contraceptives
and changes in community norms, values and beliefs related to adolescent sexuality
and teenage childbearing. Teen parents and their children are at risk for poor health
outcomes.
When question phrased as ‘influences teen parents’ experience’ the intent is to get at
the teens experience prior to getting pregnant (factors leading up to pregnancy) and
their experience as a parent.
