Week 3
ILO: Apply hermeneutical principles to the exegetical process.
Before reading further, take a few moments to read and choose one of the following passages:
Revelation 3:14-22
Luke 7:36-39
1 Kings 19:8-13
Matthew 15:21-28
As you have read, before going to commentaries for deeper research, you should first try to understand a passage for yourself. Therefore, before taking the time to research this passage further and before reading the rest of the discussion forum instructions, answer the following:
What were you taught about this passage, if anything? What would be your “educated” guess about this passage given your observations about the text? (at least 50 words)
Next, you will need to do a brief bit of research into this passage. In light of your research and your readings for the week, what does the contextual analysis research teach us about this passage? What historical elements should come into our interpretation for how we understand this passage? (at least 100 words)
Why (especially in this scenario) is it so important to pay attention to the contextual analysis? (at least 50 words)
Two particularly good commentaries for the NT and OT historical background are the following (however, you may use any approved commentary for this assignment as long as it is from the SEU Library):
Walton, John H., Victor Harold Matthews, and Mark W. Chavalas. The IVP Bible Background Commentary: Old Testament. Downers Grove, Illinois: IVP Academic, 2000.https://seu.on.worldcat.org/oclc/884586385
Keener, Craig S. The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament. 2014..
You may use other resources than what is listed. They must be scholarly sources.
