Writing the Definition essay
You have quite a bit to review this week! This is a writing driven class, which means we put pen to paper, fire up the computer, and hit the ground running.
The definition essay is a good place to begin when it comes to developing a strong thesis statement and organizing your ideas. Definition and classification occur when a single subject is subdivided into its parts or categories. Classifying is the process of taking many things and separating them into groups. For example, librarians classify books by theme (fiction, travel, health) to make them easier to find. It is a process of sorting. Dividing, in contrast, takes one thing and divides it into smaller parts. For the purpose of this course, either approach is acceptable. Below is an example (not your topic )of how to break a category into parts:
College Students
1. Those who work hard to achieve a goal.
2. Those who don’t know why they’re in college.
3. Those who just want to get by.
Keeping a purpose in mind, for your next paper, you will write about the poem “Her Kind” p.445:
Essay topic:
Sexton identifies three distinguishing characteristics-one in each stazna- of the kind of women she is writing about- what are they?/what do the represent.
Once you decide on a topic, start by pre-writing (listing, clustering, or free writing). From there, come up with a tentative thesis. When you structure your essay, remember that the body of your division or classification essay will have as many parts you have subdivisions or categories. Once you have decided on how many subdivision or categories you will have and how long each one will be, you have to decide how to order those parts or categories.
