Throughout this course, we have studied different cultural encounters that happened in the past: “The Spread of Food Production”, “The Austronesian Expansion”, “The Bantu Expansion”, “The Columbian Encounter” and “Cultural Encounters in North America”.
All of these cultural encounters led to INNOVATION AND CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION in the societies in which they took place. In the reflection paper, you have to choose (2) two of these topics and discuss in detail how these cultural encounters led to innovation and transformation. If you want, you can also choose these two topics out of the first six chapters of the textbook. You can use as well other reliable sources. In any case, you have to quote any words that you borrow literally from another text. The minimum extension of the paper is 1000 words.
The reflection paper represents 10% of the overall grade. You have to hand it in through the Turnitin Assignment on the Content Area on or before April 18, 2020 (11:59pm). I will assess the reflection paper according to the rubric that I copy below. The writing should be well organized and you should demonstrate a deep understanding of the topics addressed. If you have any questions, please contact me.
RUBRIC FOR REFLECTION PAPERS [0 TO 10 POINTS]
Prof. Ioannis Antzus Ramos
0 | Failure to submit the paper. |
3 | The student submits the reflection paper but the paper fails to demonstrate minimal comprehension of the readings or the subject researched or discussed to pass at the university level. The paper also fails to identify and address an issue properly. |
5 | The reflection paper demonstrates only minimal comprehension or understanding of the readings and the subject discussed. The paper begins to identify and address an issue, but does not represent satisfactory university-level work. |
6.5 | The paper demonstrates some comprehension of the readings and the subject discussed, but there are many imprecisions, and the paper fails to tell a clear narrative story and generally lacks structure. |
8 | The paper demonstrates a good comprehension of the readings. Nevertheless, it repeats many ideas from the texts and the personal approach to the topic discussed is limited. At the formal level, it can have a clear narrative and an identifiable structure. |
10 | The paper demonstrates mastery of the readings and the subject discussed. It is evident that the student has understood them excellently and has deeply reflected about them. The student writes the paper from his own personal voice to the point that it becomes a creative exercise, much more than a mere repetition of the readings and the class content. The essay has a clear narrative, is well structured and makes a strong point. |
