Write a 1200-word essay that states and supports (with research) your position on the topic of the influence of user reviews. Complete Draft due: Sunday, November 22 by 11 pm. *A strong draft will be full length and respond to the criteria described below and explained in this week’s lecture. Drafts are works in progress, of course, but they should demonstrate full responsiveness to the class materials and a class week’s worth of effort.* Final, Revised Version due: Sunday, December 6 by 11 p.m. See course calendar. Basic Requirements Audience: Write your essay for a group of readers who don’t know you. Assume they are critical thinkers who are skeptical of you and your position. To convince them, you’ll need to show that you’re informed and trustworthy. See section on research and this week’s lecture for info on building your credibility. Thesis: Your entire essay must be focused on your thesis, which is your position on the topic of the influence of user reviews. Be sure to consider my comments on your Research Assignment from Week 8. Structure: Your essay must follow the standard general structure of introduction, body, conclusion. Each body paragraph must be focused on a single topic that connects to the thesis. See this week’s lecture, Writing Your Essay, for details on each part of your review. Research/Specifics/Quotations: Your essay must include evidence from your research. You must use and cite at least 3 sources. Essays that cite fewer than 3 sources do not meet the minimum requirements for this assignment. You do not need to quote from every source (paraphrasing counts, and still must be cited). No more than 20% of your paper should be quoted material. See this week’s lecture for types of sources you should use and how to use them. Page Formatting Guidelines: 12-point standard font (e.g. Arial or Times New Roman) Double spaced Include word count at end of document Heading in top left corner that includes your name, date, and course number At the top of your first page, just below your heading, include a single-sentence statement of your thesis. Label this statement “Thesis.” Include a list of sources, formatted according to MLA guidelines. For this project, you must list at least three sources. The last page of your paper must list all sources and be titled “Works Cited.” You can find guidelines for citing sources here (from the Purdue University OWL). Please do not include a URL in your citations. Grading Criteria These are the criteria I will use when I grade your final version of Project #3: An excellent project will: Concisely and completely state your position on the question “Do online user reviews wield too much influence?” (thesis) Marshal carefully selected evidence from credible sources to support the thesis Contain focused body paragraphs that clearly connect to the thesis Apply the lessons from the Week 9 Lecture: Writing Your Essay, especially on the use of research and the Quote Sandwich Method for quotations Be thoroughly revised and be free from sentence errors Draft on time? Final on time?
