Write your final paper, between 10-15 pages or 8-12 pages if you did the oral presentation of your research, with the format that you prefer (space between lines, citation style etc) as long as you are consistent. Title pages and appendices don’t count towards the required number of pages. The topic must be relevant to second temple Judaism, so remember the primary sources that we have for studying this period. Be sure to do the introductory readings that prof. assigned, they are a way for you to learn about the period we are studying and discover things that you might be interested in writing your final paper about. A final paper is evaluated according to how well you are able to achieve the objectives and follow the method that you set in the introduction of your own paper. Another important aspect of the evaluation of your paper is how well it reflects that you became more familiar with the sources and issues of Second Temple Judaism. Another good reason to incorporate the assigned readings into your reflections about what to write in the final paper. In relation to ideas of things to write about, the kind of paper that I believe would be easier to do and, at the same time, very relevant would be to explore a specific issue in a specific text. Get to know a little bit the variety of authors and texts of the period, like some pseudepigraphic texts, or scrolls from Qumran, or the Apocrypha or writings from Philo and Josephus in the introductions assigned to you. Take a look at one or two that you liked and choose a finalist. Then maybe write about what we can learn about issues like gender, violence, poverty, family, friendship or any other topic that you like from that text. But there are even more ways to approach, research and write about the Second Temple period. This is only an idea.
