Assessment
Please read through the following case studies. Reflect on your learning and your own research. You may wish to review units of competency already completed when preparing responses. Your response must reflect your knowledge, skills, and application for this unit.
Case Study 1
You work at The Haig Street Dental Studio. A requirement of your role is to prepare patients for X-rays. Today the dentist has prescribed an intraoral periapical X-ray of the 25 using a digital sensor and you are tasked with preparing the patient.
1. Explain how you prepare the patient for X-ray and the safety precautions you take, in order to maintain paramount radiation protection for the patient.
2. Describe the order of events that are required in order to produce an X-ray.
3. What is film speed? What implications does film speed have on potential radiation exposure?
4. Why is it important to implement safety precautions to protect the patient and operator/ other staff from hazards/risks associated with X-rays?

Case Study 2
As part of your role at the Haig Street Dental Practice you have been asked by your operator to view and assess several X-rays recently taken as part of the quality assurance process. You are to use a reference X-ray for comparison. You notice that of three films processed, one has been overexposed, another has cone cut, and a third has elongated roots.
Answer the following questions:
2.1 What is a reference X-ray, how is it produced, and what purpose does it have in the surgery?
2.2 List what may have caused the identified processing errors.
