Your research paper will be an argument. This means that your thesis will include a central claim; this claim will be developed with supporting claims, or reasons; and evidence–found through research–will be analyzed and interpreted to develop and support your ideas. Your purpose is to persuade readers to consider your argument as reasonable.
When some students learn that they will write an argument, they immediately think of pros and cons, of taking a side on a debatable topic. This is a good way to begin thinking about the topic, but there’s more to consider.
One thing to consider is that there are different types of arguments. There are arguments of definition, causal arguments, arguments of evaluation, arguments of proposal, and others. Your primary concern, early in your process, should be that the thesis you develop is debatable. To help you achieve this, you will start with a debatable research question.
Debatable Question
The first step of your research process is to develop a research question, which will guide your focused research. Your research question–refined for focus and grounded in evidence–It is the question that your paper will answer. A later page in this module will explain the question in greater detail. For now, consider that the paper you will write will make an argument; thus, the question you begin with must be debatable. Why or how questions are often good questions for researched arguments when people disagree about the answers.
Requirements
These requirements relate to the final draft of your research paper:
Minimum of 5 full pages of argument (You may write more.)
Use of a minimum of 7 sources (You may–and are encouraged to–use more.)
All sources must come from PCC’s library databases or be pre-approved by your instructor.
MLA-style documentation and formatting
