Maths Homework Support: For Parents: Effective Strategies
You don’t need to know the answer to be useful. These questions and habits help more than explaining it yourself.
Many parents worry they’ll confuse their child because maths is taught differently now. The good news: your most useful role is coach, not teacher.
Ask, don’t tell
When your child is stuck, ask “What is the question asking you to find?” and “What did you do in class for a problem like this?” Talking it through often unlocks the answer.
Never say “I was bad at maths too.” Kids hear it as permission to give up.Margin note from Daniel
Check the method, not just the answer
Ask them to explain each step out loud. If they can explain it, they understand it. If they can’t, that’s the step to ask the teacher about.
Keep it short
Twenty focused minutes is better than an hour of frustration. Stop before tempers rise, and come back to it later.
